Battery Curbside Collection Update

The results are in for the special Battery Curbside Collection and City residents are to be congratulated on a job well done.

During the special week-long event November 12 – 15, 2013, the City of Peterborough collected 3.2 tonnes of household batteries. This one-week total is more than half the amount collected at our Household Hazardous Waste Depot in all of 2012.

Clearly, residents appreciated the convenience of a curbside collection. Please remember though, that this was a special collection, and batteries are not normally collected with recycling.

City residents are encouraged to continue to recycle your spent batteries at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot, or, save them for the next curbside collection in March 2014. The Household Hazardous Waste Depot is open year-round, Wednesday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., to accept your batteries and other household hazardous wastes, free of charge.

Visit www.peterborough.ca/waste for more details, or call 705-742-7777, ext 1657 or toll free 1-855-738-3755, ext 1657.

City Achieved E-Waste Milestone in 2012

For the second year in a row, the City of Peterborough has achieved a milestone in the collection of used electronics. A total of 270,753 kilograms of e-waste was collected at our two facilities in 2012:

  • the Household Hazardous Waste Depot (Pido Road)
  • the Landfill Site (Bensfort Road)

Ontario Electronics Stewardship (OES), which the City partners with for this program, diverted 75,702 tonnes of this material province-wide last year.

OES sends congratulations to the residents of Peterborough for their obvious commitment to sustainability and a green economy.

Keep up the good work Peterborough and continue to recycle your used computers, televisions, cell phones and other electronics, for free, at one of the City’s facilities.

Blowing Recyclables

High winds are forecast to continue throughout this week. In order to reduce the amount of recyclable items blowing around City streets, residents are asked to please wait till the morning of your collection to place blue boxes at the curb.

Tips to avoid blowing recyclables include:

  • Do not to over-fill blue boxes
  • Place paper and flattened cardboard sideways in your “Fiber and Plastic Film” box, rather than piling upwards.
  • Place lighter materials in a secure spot (e.g. put clear plastic trays underneath heavier steel and glass containers).

Residents are encouraged to write their address on their blue boxes, so they can be identified and returned if they should blow away from your property. Lost blue boxes will not be replaced for free.
