Emerald Ash Borer

As part of its pro-active Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Management Plan and working partnership with Peterborough County, the City of Peterborough has installed the first of its road signs (on The Parkway near Sir Sandford Fleming Drive) to remind visitors and the community about the danger of moving firewood.

“Monitoring the insect and public awareness of the dangers of moving firewood around the region are at the forefront of our management plan” said Paul Hambidge, Urban Forestry Specialist with the City.

Working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the City has deployed 19 insect traps at high risk locations throughout the City.

“Early detection of the insect in Peterborough allows us to manage the impact of the EAB in an efficient and cost-effective way as outlined in the City’s EAB Management Plan” Paul Hambidge said. “Monitoring in this way allows us to detect the insect and act before it reaches damaging levels”.

Public awareness, with an exchange of information, is also high on the agenda with public information centers planned across the community throughout the summer.

Sidewalk Strategic Plan Meeting November 21

Recognizing the value of a walkable community and the essential role that sidewalks play, the City of Peterborough policy is to provide sidewalks on both sides of all streets. Some streets were developed prior to this policy being in place and as a result, there are no sidewalks on many streets. Every year, new sidewalks are installed in locations where there was no sidewalk previously. In order to provide these new sidewalks where they are most needed, the city developed a Sidewalk Strategic Plan in 2008. The Sidewalk Strategic Plan ranks all missing sidewalks in the city according to a set of criteria to determine which sidewalks are the most important to provide. The criteria are comprehensive and examples include the type of street, how many students are designated walkers in that area, proximity to high density housing and whether it is on a transit route. The focus for provision of new sidewalks is on ones that are a Priority 1 or 2. The Plan only addresses locations where new sidewalks should be provided, not where sidewalks need repair. At this meeting, information will be provided about the purpose of the Sidewalk Strategic Plan, the criteria used to rate sidewalks and the revised sidewalk ratings. The technical aspects of the update have been completed and public input is requested to ensure that the criteria used to rate the sidewalks reflect community values and that missing sidewalks are rated appropriately within the Plan.  The public meeting is scheduled for: Date: Wednesday, November 21, 2012 Time: 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., presentation at 5:00 p.m. Location: Simcoe Street Transit Terminal, 190 Simcoe Street, Peterborough

Active Forms of Transportation – Public Input Session November 1st

The City of Peterborough has several by-laws that regulate active forms of transportation such as cycling, skateboarding and in-line skating. These by-laws are due for administrative updates, and because the City has received requests from user groups for changes to them, the following by-laws are now under review:

Chapter 729 of the Municipal Code (requirement for a bike license)

  • By-Law 09-164 – A By-Law to Prohibit Vehicles on Public Lands or Property in the City of Peterborough
  • By-Law 91-71 Traffic By-Law

Staff have conducted research to learn what is being done in other municipalities. At this stage in the review, staff would like to hear from citizens what their concerns are related to the existing by-laws and what solutions they favour.

A public input session is scheduled for Thursday, November 1 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Simcoe Street Transit Terminal, 190 Simcoe Street.

All information and the survey that will be at the public input session are also available on the City of Peterborough Website at www.peterborough.ca/transportation.
