September – Local Food Month!

Earlier this year, both the City and the County of Peterborough were proud to declare September as Local Food Month.  Congratulations to Farms At Work, Transition Town Peterborough and the hard-working organizing committee volunteers who have made Local Food Month come to life with an exciting array of events, anchored by the 5th annual Purple Onion Festival to be held on Sept 20th, 11am-5pm, at Millenium Park.   To view the many events that are happening this month please visit their website.

2014 Purple Onion Festival

The Purple Onion Festival is a celebration of our local community, a more resilient and sustainable one, one that supports our local farmers and locally owned businesses by building relationships with them, by making connections and by living more locally. Come out to the Festival this Sunday, September the 21st, 11-4, at Peterborough’s Millennium Park, and celebrate local! Admission is free. Sustainable Peterborough is proud to be one of the partners in the “Buy Local Cash Mob” event taking place on Wednesday, June 4th, at the Electric City Bread Company, 165 Sherbrooke Street, Peterborough, from 10 am until 5 pm.

Local Food Forum

On September 18, 2013, the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs launched a key piece of their broader food strategy – The Local Food Fund.  The Local Food Fund is a 3-year initiative with funding of up to $10 million per year to support innovative local food projects that reduce barriers to sustainable, regional economic development.  The goal of the Local Food Fund is to increase the purchase of Ontario foods and contribute to increase economic activity.

  • local food agencies, groups and service providers are invited to make a 5 minute presentation on their local food programs and services, followed by
  • Judy Coward, Economic Development Consultant with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, will provide an overview of the Local Food Fund & application details.
