Category: General Dr. Diane Saxe on Ontario’s Protected Land Shortfall

November 15, 2018

Dr. Saxe will be talking about the commitment Canada has made to the Convention on Biological Diversity, a major international treaty to protect at least 10% of its marine and coastal areas and 17% of its land by 2020. In her Good Choices, Bad Choices, the 2017 Environmental Protection Report, Dr. Saxe points out that only 10.7% of Ontario is currently protected, yet the province does not have a plan to meet the 17% target.

A recent survey of 2,000 Canadians found that 80% of us are worried that accessible natural areas will not be there for future generations and that 87% of us feel happier, healthier and more productive when connected to nature. We also know that shared access to nature is becoming more difficult.

Dr. Saxe says that Ontario must undertake a frank assessment of the current status of the protected areas system, identify key opportunities for expansion, and make a clear public commitment to achieving, and eventually exceeding, the conservation target.
